Europastry, the Catalan frozen bakery company, will open its new cold storage logistics facility at Goodman’s Barcelona City Hub in 2027, marking the first new building at the former Nissan site, and a significant milestone in the reindustrialisation of Barcelona’s Zona Franca.

Pilar Díaz, Territorial Delegate of the Government of Catalonia in Barcelona, and Jordi Valls, Fourth Deputy Mayor for Economy, Finance, Economic Promotion and Tourism of Barcelona City Council, visited the construction site today. They were hosted by Philippe Van der Beken, CEO of Goodman Continental Europe, and Marta Minguell, Group Supply Chain Director at Europastry.

Built for efficient global distribution

Marta Minguell, Group Supply Chain Director at Europastry, said: “Our new facility at Goodman’s Barcelona City Hub will allow us to keep improving the service we offer our customers and strengthen the connection between our production plants in Catalonia and international markets. Its strategic location close to the Port of Barcelona and the bespoke design of the facility will make our logistics operations more efficient and support Europastry’s international growth.”

Purpose-built for Europastry, the facility combines frozen storage at -22°C with temperature-controlled handling areas and office space.

The cold rooms have been designed using a box-in-box concept to create thermally independent enclosures that provide continuous insulation and maintain the required temperature conditions.

The development also incorporates lower-impact materials and solutions intended to reduce construction-related carbon emissions. The roof will host a solar photovoltaic installation of approximately 1,000 kWp, with all electricity generated to be consumed by Europastry under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Goodman.

From automotive manufacturing to a multi-sector industrial hub

Barcelona City Hub is a flagship reindustrialisation project for Catalonia and Spain, bringing together public authorities, workers, trade unions and businesses to return the former Nissan site to productive use. Goodman was awarded the site in February 2023, and has committed €123 million to developing the 144,000 m² multi-sector hub in Barcelona’s Zona Franca.

Philippe Van der Beken, CEO of Goodman Continental Europe, said: “Bringing this land back into use has been a long journey for our team in Spain, and that is what long-term investment looks like. Today we are seeing the results of the collaboration between public authorities, workers and businesses: productive activity, jobs and economic value being created for the region."

"EBRO is manufacturing cars in the former plant, and we are delivering the first new logistics facility on the site for a Europastry, a Catalan company that distributes globally. We will continue to develop the rest of the land with the same collaborative approach, supporting the productive future of Barcelona and Catalonia.”
